Pregnancy is a time when the body undergoes many physical changes at a very fast pace. Major postural changes occur during pregnancy, i.e. increased size and weight of breast & uterus in the front of the body which adds pressure to the low back and sacroiliac joints. The hormone relaxin is released as early as 3 weeks to allow the softening of joints & ligaments which accommodates the growth of the fetus and helps in easier delivery. Physical therapy can safely treat back pain and other injuries related to pregnancy. We also teach you how to maintain alignment and core strength as your joints become more flexible.

By focusing on specific abdominal exercises and breathing techniques, physical therapy can help prepare women for labor and delivery. Strong abdominal muscles and knowledge of proper pushing strategy can help women push more effectively and shorten delivery time. Furthermore, safe abdominal strengthening during pregnancy will help promote a faster recovery, a quicker return to pre-pregnancy figure, less back and pelvic pain and can minimize abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti).

Whether delivery was a vaginal birth or Cesarean section, most women need some rehabilitation following delivery. Along with teaching the best postures and body mechanics for feeding, lifting and carrying your new baby, we also can address these issues:

  • Low back pain
  • Upper back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Wrist & Hand pain

  • Pubic bone pain
